Bridges Specialist

Over his decade-plus serving Fairfax, Virginia, Dr. Tom Drummond has helped many patients who lost teeth. As a dentist who specializes in bridges, he’s the perfect oral surgeon for Northern Virginia patients who have lost one or more teeth, or who need to have teeth extracted.

What Are Bridges?

Bridges are natural-looking dental appliances that can replace a section of missing teeth. Because they are custom-made, bridges are barely noticeable and can restore the natural contour of teeth as well as the proper bite relationship between upper and lower teeth. Bridges replace a missing tooth by holding a prosthetic one in place via a bridge. The bridge connects the artificial tooth to the neighboring teeth, thus securing the artificial one in place. A bridge may replace a single tooth or several teeth in a row.

Do Bridges Look Natural?

Bridges are designed to look like natural teeth. When putting a bridge in, Dr. Drummond always takes care to design the bridge so that it will match the color and contour of the patient’s other teeth. Once in place, his custom bridges are barely noticeable.

Are Bridges Purely Cosmetic?

While restoring a person’s smile is often the main reason for installing a bridge, it’s hardly the only one. A missing tooth may affect chewing and talking (as well as singing and whistling). Putting a bridge in restores the bite relationship, and makes talking easier.

Are All Bridges the Same?

Although all bridges are designed to serve a similar function, there are many different types of bridges. Some are removable and can be cleaned by patients. Others can’t be removed at home and must be cleaned by a dentist. Some common kinds of bridges include conventional fixed bridges, resin-bonded bridges and cantilever bridges. These bridges may be made from gold alloys, porcelain or other materials. Dr. Drummond is happy to sit down and discuss the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of each kind of bridge with patients.

How Long Does Putting In a Bridge Take?

Dr. Drummond may want to schedule several appointments with patients who need bridges, as there is often a pre-procedure consultation, the procedure, and a post-procedure follow-up. None of these appointments, however, take too long. Even the appointment when the bridge is installed is an outpatient procedure. Patients return to their home or office once it’s completed.
